What is an inventory health check?

An inventory health check is a diagnostic that measures how well a product or SKU is being managed across demand, supply, forecasting and warehousing. Instead of a single number, it scores multiple dimensions — demand variability, forecast error, lead-time reliability, service level and more — to reveal where excess capital is locked up and where stockout risk is highest. This tool produces a composite 10-dimension health score plus specific, actionable fixes.

How do you calculate safety stock?

Safety stock is the buffer that protects against demand and lead-time variability. The standard formula is SS = Z × √(LT × σ²demand + demand² × σ²LT), where Z is the service-level z-score (1.65 for 95%, 2.33 for 99%). This tool calculates it automatically from your demand history, lead time and target service level, so you don't need to build the spreadsheet yourself.

What is ABC-XYZ classification?

ABC-XYZ is a two-axis segmentation: ABC ranks SKUs by value (A = high, C = low) and XYZ ranks them by demand variability (X = stable, Z = volatile). The 9-cell matrix tells you which items deserve tight control and high service levels (AX) versus which can run lean (CZ). The tool assigns each SKU its cell automatically.

Who should use this tool?

Inventory planners, demand planners, supply chain analysts, operations managers and small-business owners who want a fast, evidence-based read on inventory health without expensive software. It is also a practical teaching aid for supply chain students learning safety stock, reorder points and service-level theory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know
How do I check my inventory health for free?
Use the Mathnal Inventory Diagnostic Tool at mathnal.tech/inventory_diagnostic_tool.html. Enter your product data and get a 10-dimension health score covering demand variability, safety stock, ABC-XYZ classification, reorder points, dead stock detection, and service level analysis — all free, browser-based, no signup required.
What are the 10 dimensions of inventory health?
The 10 dimensions are: demand pattern, risk exposure, forecast error, lead time reliability, transportation efficiency, warehousing utilisation, production alignment, optimisation potential, decision speed, and overall supply chain integration. Each dimension is scored 0–100 and combined into a composite health index.
What is ABC-XYZ classification in inventory management?
ABC-XYZ classification combines two methods: ABC ranks items by value (A=high, B=medium, C=low), while XYZ ranks by demand variability (X=stable, Y=moderate, Z=volatile). The resulting 9-cell matrix (AX, AY, AZ, BX, BY, BZ, CX, CY, CZ) helps determine optimal inventory policies for each segment.
How is safety stock calculated?
Safety stock = Z-score × √(lead time × demand variance² + average demand² × lead time variance²). The Z-score corresponds to your target service level (e.g., 1.65 for 95%, 2.33 for 99%). The Mathnal tool calculates this automatically from your input data and target service level.
